Frameset Help
Here is some information that applies to the traditional frameset version of the site only.
Sidebar Frame
The left frame displays various sidebars. Initially, there's a collapsible list that I call the menu. Click on a link to load the target into the main frame (that's this frame here). To expand a menu, click the icon, to collapse it, click on the icon. The site map reproduces the exact structure of the menu; load it for a better overview. The sidebar can also display search results, bookmarks, a history list, the document outline, and a find text utility.
The sidebar has a built-in search capability, which can be reached from the menu as well. Enter a keyword in the text box under "Search", and press enter. The results will be shown in the search sidebar, and you can then follow the links (you can also switch back and forth between the search results and other sidebar contents). The search works with keywords (not full-text).
Header Frame
In the upper frame, there are some navigational helper shortcuts :
- Synchronize Menu. If you need to locate the page that you are currently viewing in the menu, click on this button (this will display the menu if it's hidden). This might not work on all pages (for some pages, only the closest referee page wil be highlighted in the menu). Try Ctrl+Shift+S as a keybord shortcut.
- Menu: show the menu sidebar (in case it's hidden, or another sidebar is displayed). Try Ctrl+Shift+M as a keybord shortcut.
- Search: show a special sidebar that let's you search the site, and displays search results as hyperlinks. Try Ctrl+Shift+F as a keybord shortcut.
- Bookmarks: show a special sidebar that let's you bookmark individual pages (bookmarks will be saved in a cookie). Try Ctrl+Shift+B as a keybord shortcut.
- History: show a special sidebar listing all the pages you have visited in the current session (a global history of unique entries ordered by the time you last visited the pages). The most recently visited pages are shown on top. Try Ctrl+Shift+H as a keybord shortcut.
- Document Outline: show a special sidebar displaying the structure of the current page. It's based on the headings. The document outline does not work for all pages. Try Ctrl+Shift+O as a keybord shortcut.
- Text Finder: helps you find text in a document. You can move back and forth between occurrances, or highlight all hits. As a keyboard shortcut, try Ctrl+Shift+T.
- Left arrow: navigate back in the history list of the main frame.
- Right arrow: navigate forward in the history list of the main frame.
- Start: load the start page.
- Help: load this page here.
- Sitemap: load the site map.
- Mail: contact me.
- Full screen view: open a new window that's maximized, no toolbars etc., which contains the current contents of the main frame. Close that window to return. Try Ctrl+Shift+N as a keybord shortcut.
Other Tips
Under "Preferences", you can choose a custom font, give the site any back color you like, or use your own background music. You can activate the auto-link feature (which scans the text of pages for keywords and builds in-site links), enable page collapsing, and control the behaviour of the menu. All settings will be saved in a cookie.
If you're missing information, or can't determine the context of a given page, try locating it using the Synchronize Menu button (that is the leftmost one in the upper frame). I like organizing information hierarchically, and having a look at parenting pages will often be useful.
The Document Outline is a useful tool for finding content on a given page. The Text Finder is helpful as well.
The site is tolerant of different screen resolution settings, but 800x600 or 1024x728 are the ones that produce the most favourable viewing experience. For small screens, try hiding the sidebar, or use full-screen view.
Make sure to enable Javascript. There is no security risk since I'm a good guy. Plus, Javascript is comparedly harmless anyway.
Enable cookies. This way, you can save bookmarks, individual settings (see preferences) as well as the high score list of the dice game.
